DIY Series – Part 8: The Best Ways to Save Digitized Photos in Chronological Order (Without Using Folders!)

You’ve scanned and digitized your old photos—now what?

If you want to store them in a way that mimics a timeline instead of using folders, you need a system that automatically organizes photos by date and makes browsing effortless.

This guide covers the best ways to store photos chronologically using cloud-based platforms, plus strategies for handling undated or incorrectly dated images.

Why Dates Matter for Digitized Photos

When you scan or digitize physical photos, the resulting files often lack accurate metadata, like the date the photo was taken. Instead, the system might use the scan date, which makes chronological organization confusing unless corrected manually.

Option 1: Apple Photos (Mac & iPhone Users)

If you use Apple devices, Apple Photos automatically sorts pictures by date, location, and people, making it easy to browse a timeline of memories.

How to Import Digitized Photos Chronologically
  1. Open Apple Photos on your Mac or iPhone.
  2. Click File > Import and select your digitized photos.
  3. Apple Photos will display them based on existing metadata—usually the scan date.
How to Fix Incorrect or Missing Dates
  • Single photo:
    • On Mac: Right-click the photo → Get Info → Edit the Date and Time.
    • On iPhone: Swipe up on a photo → Tap Adjust Date & Time → Enter the correct date.
  • Multiple photos at once:
    • On Mac: Select multiple photos → Right-click → Adjust Date and Time.
    • Use the “Apply to all” feature to shift or assign the same estimated date range.

💡 If you’re unsure of the exact date, assign an approximate year or decade (e.g., 1980 or 1990s).

Why Use Apple Photos?
  • Automatically syncs across all Apple devices.
  • Lets you search by year, month, location, or even faces.
Limitations:
  • Only works within the Apple ecosystem.
  • No built-in way to tag or caption people in bulk.

Option 2: Google Photos (Best Free Option for All Devices)

Google Photos is a powerful, AI-driven platform that organizes photos by date, people, and even objects in the image.

How to Import Digitized Photos Chronologically
  1. Upload photos to photos.google.com or the Google Photos app.
  2. Google will sort them using metadata—if present—but manual date editing is often needed.
How to Fix Incorrect or Missing Dates
  • Single photo: Click on a photo → More (⋮) > Edit Date & Time → Set the correct date.
  • Multiple photos: Select multiple photos → Click the pencil/edit icon → Change the date and time for all selected items.
Why Use It?
  • Free storage (limited at high quality).
  • AI search (e.g., type “beach 1990” to find related photos).
  • Works across Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS.
Limitations:
  • No folder structure (everything is timeline-based).
  • Limited free storage (counts toward Google Drive space).

Option 3: Amazon Photos (Great for Prime Members)

Amazon Photos offers automatic date-based organization.

How to Import & Organize by Date
  1. Upload photos via the Amazon Photos app or web browser.
  2. Amazon will sort them based on available metadata.
Fixing Incorrect Dates
  • Amazon doesn’t currently support manual date changes.
  • Fix dates before uploading using a tool like ExifTool or in Apple Photos or Google Photos.
Why Use It?
  • Unlimited full-resolution photo storage for Prime members.
  • AI-powered search similar to Google Photos.
Limitations:
  • No manual date editing post-upload.
  • No free unlimited storage without Prime.

What If Your Photos Have No Date Metadata?

Many old scanned photos don’t include embedded dates. Here’s how to handle them:

1. Use File Naming for Quick Searchability

Rename photos before uploading:

  • 1982-Family-Reunion.jpg instead of Scan001.jpg
  • 1990s_Birthday_Party.jpg
2. Create Albums by Decade or Event

If dates are unknown, group photos by general timeframes:

  • 📁 1980s → 📁 Family Events
  • 📁 1990s → 📁 Travel
3. Use AI to Estimate Dates
  • Upload to Google Photos or Apple Photos—these platforms may suggest possible dates based on visual patterns.

The Best Way to Preserve Your Photo Memories

If you want a chronological, searchable photo archive without manually sorting folders, Apple Photos, Google Photos, and Amazon Photos are your best options.

  • Best for Apple users: 📱 Apple Photos
  • Best free option for everyone: 🌍 Google Photos
  • Best for Prime members: 🚀 Amazon Photos

No matter which system you choose, taking the time to organize your digitized photos ensures they’re easy to find and enjoy for years to come.
